GMDA Revises Garhi Railway Crossing Plan to Four-Lane Overbridge in Gurgaon
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has made a significant decision to revisit and upgrade its plan for constructing a rail overbridge at the Garhi railway crossing. Initially proposed as a two-lane structure, the authority now plans to build a four-lane overbridge to better accommodate the escalating traffic volume along the Dwarka Expressway.
Revised Design and Cost-Sharing Agreement
Officials have confirmed that consent has been obtained from the railways for a 50:50 cost-sharing arrangement. A detailed project report will be prepared based on this revised design, which marks a substantial shift from the original 2024 proposal. The overbridge was first planned as a two-lane structure with an estimated cost of around Rs 55 crore, but the new four-lane design is expected to require updated financial assessments.
Enhanced Connectivity and Traffic Relief
The proposed overbridge is anticipated to provide a crucial alternative route for commuters traveling between the Dwarka Expressway and nearby sectors. This development aims to reduce pressure on the existing two-lane Basai rail overbridge, which connects Basai to Dhankot and frequently experiences congestion during peak hours. Improved connectivity is expected for several residential societies, including BPTP Township, Imperial Esfera, ILD Greens, Apex Our Homes, and Signature Global, along with other upcoming projects. Key institutional and industrial areas, such as schools, hospitals, and establishments in sectors 37C, 37D, 9B, and Basai village, are also set to benefit from this infrastructure enhancement.
Feasibility Study and Technical Details
A GMDA official stated, "We have asked the consultant to submit a feasibility report. Based on that, the detailed design and cost estimates will be finalised. The railways have agreed to share 50% of the cost. Land availability is largely not an issue, but the alignment involves some curvature, so final length and technical details will be clear after the feasibility study." This step underscores the careful planning involved in the project to ensure optimal outcomes.
State Budget Allocation and Urban Mobility
In the state budget presented in March, the Haryana government earmarked Rs 302 crore for five grade separators in the city, including the proposed Garhi overbridge. This allocation is part of a broader initiative to strengthen urban mobility infrastructure and address growing transportation needs in Gurgaon.
Current Road Conditions and Resident Concerns
Despite these plans, commuters continue to face challenges with poor road conditions at the existing railway crossing. The approach road, originally constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD), is plagued by deep potholes, broken concrete slabs, and stagnant wastewater from nearby households, making daily travel both slow and hazardous. Residents report that the stretch has been neglected, with no agency taking responsibility for repairs. Sandeep Sharma, RWA president of BPTP Park Serene in Sector 37D, highlighted the issue, saying, "During the rains, it turns into a waterlogged mess, and traffic movement becomes chaotic. Both the PWD and MCG are passing the buck on each other, but there has been no resolution." He added, "Dwarka Expressway is just a five-minute drive away from our society. However, it sometimes takes 20 minutes to pass the railway crossing. GMDA should take up the construction of the overbridge on priority."
The revised plan for the Garhi overbridge represents a proactive step by GMDA to improve traffic flow and safety in Gurgaon, addressing both immediate concerns and long-term urban development goals.
