In a significant push to enhance the city's aesthetics and public infrastructure, authorities in the national capital have rolled out a comprehensive beautification and cleanliness drive. The ambitious plan targets key parks, major roads, and public spaces across Delhi, focusing on increasing green cover, improving waste management, and revamping civic amenities.
Greening the Concrete Jungle
The initiative places a strong emphasis on expanding Delhi's green lungs. The plan involves planting non-thorny flowering plants in prominent parks and along market roads to add colour and vibrancy. A standout feature is the creation of vertical gardens on Metro and bridge pillars at several major junctions. Areas identified for this vertical greening include Sarai Kale Khan, South Extension, Malviya Nagar, Defence Colony, and Greater Kailash I & II.
Furthermore, authorities will ensure that fountains are operational at major public spaces to improve their appeal. Locations such as Qutub Park, PVR Saket, GK-II M Block, Waste to Wonder Park, Bharat Darshan Park, and Shaheedi Park are slated to get these active water features.
War on Waste and Infrastructure Repair
A major component of the drive is tackling cleanliness and solid waste management head-on. The civic bodies plan to deploy 2,000 new public bins across the city to curb littering. A massive cleaning operation will cover 3,000 kilometres of road medians and dividers, along with 5,000 metres of footpaths. In a move to eliminate eyesores and health hazards, roadside dhalaos and garbage dumps along major corridors will be removed systematically.
Parallelly, a focus on fixing crumbling infrastructure is underway. The plan includes repairing 30 important roads and fixing 11,010 square metres of footpaths. Additionally, 600 manholes will be either repainted or replaced to ensure safety and functionality.
Beautification, Safety, and Illumination
Beyond basic repairs, the project aims to transform neglected spaces into points of visual interest. Abandoned traffic islands will be revamped with electric signage for better navigation. The city will also see the installation of 50 new statues and the development of greenery, vertical gardens, and sculptures under 16 flyovers.
Safety and aesthetics will also get a boost through electrical works. A coordinated effort with power distribution companies (discoms) will target the removal of dangerous hanging wires in Old Delhi stretches, heritage zones, and around major hotels and monuments.
Finally, lighting will be improved at several public spots to enhance security and evening appeal. The Civic Centre, Mehrauli, Seven Wonders Park, Bharat Darshan Park, and Shaheedi Park are specifically mentioned for improved illumination under this scheme.
This multi-pronged drive represents a concerted effort to elevate Delhi's public realm, making it cleaner, greener, and more visually appealing for its residents and visitors. The success of these initiatives will depend on sustained execution and public cooperation.
