Chandigarh MC Starts Road Recarpeting Works with Rs 87.34 Crore Budget

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Launches Major Road Recarpeting Initiative

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has officially commenced the allotment process for newly planned road recarpeting works, following the completion of the entire tendering procedure. This significant infrastructure move aims to enhance the city's road network ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

Allotment Process and Current Status

While ongoing works from earlier allotments continue, the MC has recently awarded two out of approximately a dozen new tenders to eligible bidders. The corporation is strategically prioritizing the completion of maximum allotted works before the monsoon arrives to ensure minimal disruption and improved road conditions during heavy rains.

The tendering process is managed sub-division wise, with each sub-divisional officer (SDO) overseeing individual tenders. Final allotments will be made at the level of the executive engineer from the building and road department. Engineering officers will closely monitor the applied terms and conditions to guarantee that all works adhere to the established parameters and quality standards.

Financial Scope and Project Details

The engineering department of the MC has prepared an estimated cost of around Rs 87.34 crore for recarpeting approximately 529 kilometers of roads in Chandigarh. This initiative is part of the new financial year starting April 1, 2026, marking the second phase of the road recarpeting works. The first phase was launched last year, demonstrating the corporation's ongoing commitment to infrastructure development.

The planned and allotted works encompass not only road recarpeting but also the recarpeting of parking lots in commercial areas across various parts of the city. This comprehensive approach aims to improve both transportation and commercial infrastructure simultaneously.

Quality Assurance and Technical Audits

Ensuring quality control remains a paramount concern for the MC. The National Institute of Technical Training and Research (NITTTR) in Sector 26 will serve as the third-party agency for technical audits of the roads. Similar to the previous phase, NITTTR will evaluate the recarpeting work based on laid-down specifications and criteria, issuing certifications accordingly.

This certification process is crucial, as agencies or bidders will receive payments based on the NITTTR certifications. By involving an independent technical auditor, the MC emphasizes its dedication to maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring that all work meets the required benchmarks on the ground.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation's proactive steps in road recarpeting reflect a focused effort to upgrade urban infrastructure, enhance public safety, and support the city's growth through systematic planning and rigorous quality checks.
