After years of persistent demands from residents, the civic body has initiated formal proceedings to acquire a plot of land specifically reserved for a full-fledged fire station in the suburb's development plan.
Final Notice Issued for Reserved Plot Acquisition
In a significant development dated March 17, the K-West ward's building proposal department issued a stern reminder to the private owner of a plot located in Ambivli village. The communication explicitly demands the handover of land that has been designated for fire brigade purposes in Mumbai's official development plan. This action follows an earlier notice served on March 6, which reportedly received no compliance from the landowner.
The BMC has now established a strict seven-day deadline for compliance. The civic authority has warned that failure to comply will result in the matter being escalated to the collector of Mumbai suburban district. This would trigger formal proceedings to take possession of the reserved land through established legal channels.
Urgent Need for Fire Safety Infrastructure
The BMC's aggressive stance comes against a backdrop of growing alarm regarding inadequate fire preparedness in Andheri West. This densely populated suburban area currently lacks a dedicated fire station, despite having a reservation for such a facility on a portion of Chitrakoot grounds that has remained undeveloped for years.
"In case of a fire emergency in Andheri West, fire tenders must be dispatched from distant locations like Goregaon, Vile Parle, or Marol," explained a civic official. "This geographical disadvantage causes significant and potentially dangerous delays in emergency response times."
Local resident Dhaval Shah from Lokandwala highlighted the frequency of fire incidents, noting that "almost a fire occurs in the area every month." This alarming pattern underscores the urgent necessity for localized firefighting infrastructure.
Recent Fire Incident Highlights Vulnerability
The urgency of the situation was tragically underscored on Tuesday when a fire broke out on the ninth floor of Meghdoot, a 22-storey residential building in Andheri West. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this incident, but it served as a stark reminder of the area's vulnerability in the absence of proximate fire services.
Political Advocacy and Unauthorized Land Use
First-time corporator Rupesh Savarkar, who has been actively pursuing the establishment of an independent fire station in Andheri West, revealed that he had formally written to the BMC chief last month regarding the matter. Savarkar brought attention to concerning unauthorized activities on the reserved plot.
"It has come to our notice that the reserved plot is currently being used illegally for various commercial purposes, including as a marriage hall, for turf activities, and as shooting studios," Savarkar stated. "Strict and immediate action should be taken against such unauthorized use. A modern, fully equipped fire station on this plot will significantly enhance emergency response capacity and ensure the safety of residents throughout the entire locality."
Procedural Requirements and Timelines
Alongside the land acquisition notice, the BMC has directed the project architect to submit a formal proposal accompanied by a bank guarantee. This procedural step is designed to ensure that, once approval is granted, construction of the fire station will commence and be completed within an 18-month timeframe.
