In a significant development for Himachal Pradesh's aviation sector, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu held a crucial meeting with Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu in New Delhi on Tuesday. The primary agenda was to seek substantial central support for the expansion of Kangra airport, a project deemed vital for the state's tourism and economic growth.
Focus on Kangra Airport Expansion and Tourism Potential
During the discussions, CM Sukhu emphasised the immense tourism potential of Kangra district, highlighting that the state government is actively implementing several ambitious projects to attract a larger influx of tourists. He stressed that the expansion of Kangra airport is crucial to support these initiatives, as improved air connectivity would facilitate easier access for visitors, thereby boosting the local economy.
Sukhu specifically requested special central assistance in the form of a grant for the Kangra airport expansion project. In response, Union Minister Kinjarapu directed officials to prepare a detailed project report for the expansion, assuring full support from the central government to move the project forward.
Key Requests for Aviation Infrastructure Improvements
Beyond the Kangra airport expansion, the Chief Minister raised several pending issues related to aviation infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, urging the Union minister to ensure their speedy resolution. One of the major proposals was the introduction of special visual flight rules to reduce the minimum visibility requirement from the existing 5 kilometres to 2.5 kilometres.
This adjustment, Sukhu argued, would help maintain flight operations during low-visibility conditions, such as fog or poor weather, thereby minimising disruptions and enhancing reliability for air travellers in the region.
Proposals for Airport Security and Operational Enhancements
In a move aimed at reducing financial burdens, CM Sukhu proposed handing over the security of Kullu and Shimla airports to the state police instead of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). He cited fewer flight operations and passengers at these airports as justification, suggesting that this change would lead to significant cost savings for the state government.
Additionally, Sukhu requested an extension of flight operation hours at Shimla airport up to 4 pm. This extension, he noted, would enhance air connectivity by allowing more flights to operate during the day, making travel more convenient for residents and tourists alike.
Boosting Connectivity and Heliport Approvals
To further improve air links, the Chief Minister sought an increase in flight frequency on the Chandigarh-Shimla route. He also urged early approval for four proposed heliports in the state, which would provide additional options for aerial transport, especially in remote or hilly areas where traditional airports might be less feasible.
These requests underscore the state government's broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure, support tourism, and foster economic development in Himachal Pradesh through enhanced air connectivity and operational efficiencies.
