Three people were killed and six others injured in Belagavi district on Wednesday when a goods tempo carrying nine occupants toppled on a bridge. The accident took place as the vehicle was crossing a bridge in the town, according to local police.
Details of the Incident
The goods tempo, which was not designed for passenger transport, had nine people on board including the driver. While navigating the bridge, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall. Three occupants died on the spot, while the remaining six were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries of varying severity.
Police officials identified the deceased as residents of Belagavi district. The injured are undergoing treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.
Response and Investigation
Local authorities reached the scene shortly after the accident. The injured were extricated from the wreckage and transported to the district hospital. Police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident, including possible overloading or mechanical failure.
“The tempo was carrying more passengers than allowed, which may have contributed to the loss of control,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity. “We are also checking if the driver was under the influence of alcohol.”
The bridge where the accident occurred is known for its narrow structure, and locals have previously raised concerns about safety. However, no official statement on road conditions has been released.
Impact and Safety Concerns
The incident highlights the dangers of using goods vehicles for passenger transport, a common practice in rural and semi-urban areas of Karnataka. Overloading and lack of safety measures often lead to fatal accidents. In 2025, over 1,200 people died in road accidents in Belagavi district alone, according to state transport department data.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid traveling in goods vehicles and to report such violations. The district administration has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured.
