A 22-year-old man was seriously injured after being stabbed inside a moving local train in Mumbai on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near Thane station, sending shockwaves among commuters. The Government Railway Police (GRP) has launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the assailant, who fled the scene after the attack.
Attack Details
The victim, identified as Rohan Shinde, a resident of Dombivli, was traveling from Kalyan to CST when the attack took place. According to GRP officials, the incident happened around 7:30 PM in a general compartment of the train. The accused, believed to be in his mid-20s, allegedly stabbed Shinde multiple times in the chest and abdomen before escaping at Thane station.
“The victim was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be stable,” said a GRP spokesperson. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for attempted murder.
Investigation and Manhunt
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the train and station to identify the accused. “We have formed multiple teams to nab the culprit. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained,” the spokesperson added. Preliminary investigations suggest a possible personal rivalry, but no arrests have been made so far.
Local commuters expressed fear and anger over the incident. “This is terrifying. We travel daily in these trains, and such incidents make us feel unsafe,” said a passenger who witnessed the attack.
Security Concerns
The stabbing has once again raised questions about security in Mumbai’s suburban train network, which carries millions of passengers daily. In recent months, there have been several reports of chain snatching and assaults inside trains. The GRP has assured increased patrolling and deployment of additional personnel in vulnerable areas.
“We are taking this incident very seriously. Our teams are working round the clock to ensure the safety of commuters,” said a senior police officer. The victim’s family has appealed for justice and stricter security measures.
