Lucknow's Odia Community Honors Utkal Diwas with Cultural Extravaganza

Members of the Odia Samaj in Lucknow gathered on Wednesday evening to celebrate Utkal Diwas, also known as Odisha Day, at the Visvesvaraya auditorium within the PWD office. This annual event marks the historic formation of Odisha as a separate province on April 1, 1936, and this year's celebration was infused with cultural richness and community spirit.

Tributes to a Dance Legend and Literary Honors

The program commenced with heartfelt tributes to the legendary Odissi dancer, Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, as the 2026 festivities were dedicated to his birth centenary. Gopabandhu Pattanaik, the president of Odia Samaj in the city, eloquently recalled Mohapatra's immense contributions to Indian classical dance and his pivotal role in elevating Odissi to global prominence.

Adding to the evening's prestige, writer and educationist Sarojini Sahoo was honored as the chief guest and conferred with the Lucknow Odia Sahitya Samman 2026 for her outstanding contributions to literature. In her address, Sahoo reflected on the significance of Utkal, the ancient name for Odisha, describing it as a land of extraordinary art, language, culinary traditions, literature, and music.

The cultural segment of the event was a highlight, featuring captivating performances that brought Odia traditions to life. Renowned Odissi dancer Manoranjan Pradhan, along with Minati Pradhan and their troupe, presented a mesmerizing performance of 'Ardhanadeshwara.' This piece beautifully illustrated the grace, rhythm, and storytelling essence of Odissi, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.

In addition to Odissi, the program included dynamic Kathak and Sambalpuri dance performances, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the evening. These acts showcased the diversity and artistic depth of Odisha's heritage, captivating attendees of all ages.

Organizers and participants emphasized that the celebration aimed to strengthen cultural ties within the Odia community in Lucknow and pass on cherished traditions to younger generations.
