Trichy Leads Adult Literacy with 60,000+ Learners in 2025-26

Trichy District Achieves Major Milestone in Adult Literacy Programme

Trichy district has demonstrated outstanding performance in adult education during the current academic year. More than 60,000 adults have gained literacy skills through the New India Literacy Programme (NILP) in 2025-26.

Recognition for Educational Leaders

School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi will chair a special function in Chennai on January 20 to honor this achievement. The Trichy Chief Educational Officer and twenty-seven grassroots functionaries will receive recognition for their work.

The felicitation list includes:

  • Nine headmasters
  • Nine block resource teacher educators (BRTEs)
  • Nine dedicated volunteers

Extensive Network of Learning Centres

Official data reveals the district established 2,805 learning centres across sixteen blocks. These centres operated in two batches:

  1. First batch: 1,178 centres
  2. Second batch: 1,627 centres

The learning spaces utilized government schools, public buildings, and open neighborhood areas. This extensive network benefited 60,023 adult learners, with women forming the majority of participants.

Breakdown of Learner Achievements

In the first batch, 22,261 learners received certification. This group included 18,500 women and 3,761 men. The second batch recorded even higher participation with 37,762 enrolments. Women accounted for 31,498 of these second-batch learners.

By surpassing the 50,000-learner benchmark, Trichy earned a place among twelve districts selected for special recognition. The selection criteria included multiple indicators:

  • Quality of learning environment
  • Enrolment and attendance rates
  • Community monitoring effectiveness
  • School management committee participation
  • Volunteer involvement levels

Growing Participation of Women

Officials noted a steady increase in women's participation over recent years. The programme enrolled 11,332 women in 2024-25 and 10,354 women in 2023-24. This trend highlights the programme's growing appeal among female learners.

The programme maintains careful tracking of learners at the community level. Only bedridden or medically unfit individuals receive exemptions from participation requirements.

Defining Literacy and Its Impact

Literacy under this programme means the ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic for individuals above seven years of age. An official explained the broader significance of this achievement.

"This recognition truly belongs to the teachers, volunteers, and communities who ensured no willing learner was left out," the official stated. "Adult literacy has empowered many women to handle everyday tasks independently. They can now read signboards and sign bank documents without assistance."

The programme's success demonstrates how coordinated efforts at multiple levels can transform educational outcomes for adults across the district.
