Panjab University Sets Ambitious Agenda for 2026 Academic Year

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig has unveiled comprehensive plans for the institution's 2026 academic calendar. The roadmap includes conducting Senate elections, launching cutting-edge undergraduate programs, recruiting new faculty members, and upgrading sports infrastructure.

Senate Elections Process Underway

The university has initiated the formal process for Senate elections following last year's controversy. Prof Vig confirmed that voter lists are currently being prepared and official notifications will be issued before month's end. The election budget stands at approximately three crore rupees.

This development comes after the Ministry of Education withdrew its controversial notification to restructure the Senate and Syndicate in November. The university subsequently submitted a detailed election schedule to the Chancellor and Vice-President of India for approval.

New Academic Programs Aligned with Industry Needs

In a significant academic expansion, Panjab University will introduce new BSc courses starting next session. The programs will focus on emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Cyber Security. These offerings align with the National Education Policy's emphasis on industry-relevant education.

Prof Vig emphasized the university's commitment to strengthening academic quality while addressing student mental health through initiatives like a Thought Lab and mentor-mentee programs.

Faculty Recruitment and Infrastructure Development

The university is actively addressing faculty shortages with ongoing recruitment for 100 advertised positions. Currently, 650 faculty members serve against sanctioned strength of 1,378 regular posts. Prof Vig expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission while noting that retirement age matters remain pending before the High Court.

Infrastructure projects include:

  • A new 2,400-seater multipurpose hall nearing completion
  • Enhanced sports facilities with new coaching staff
  • Structured parking systems and improved campus security
  • Plans for a textile research center in Panipat
  • A proposed Hall of Fame showcasing university history

Financial Stability and Academic Achievements

Prof Vig assured that Panjab University maintains solid financial footing with budgets sanctioned by both Punjab and Central governments. The institution awaits a post-matric scholarship of Rs 35 crore from the Punjab government.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted recent accomplishments including approximately 2,400 published research papers, 200 granted patents, and a QS World University Ranking of 276 for 2026. The university's overall H-index stands at 272, reflecting strong research output.

Student-Centric Initiatives

Panjab University continues implementing trilingual examination systems in Hindi, Punjabi, and English as per NEP guidelines. Only two or three papers remain to be converted to this format. The university also accommodates students who attempt exams in languages different from their selected medium.

For student convenience, smart card systems will expand with a pilot program in one hostel, following successful implementation among teaching staff. Sports enthusiasts will benefit from flexible examination options allowing greater focus on athletic pursuits.

Prof Vig expressed pride in university athletes performing at state and national levels, emphasizing continued support for sporting excellence alongside academic achievement.
