IIT Gandhinagar & GMRICS Partner to Boost India's Critical Minerals Mission
IIT Gandhinagar, GMRICS Partner for Critical Minerals

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has forged a significant partnership with Gujarat Mineral Research Industrial Consultancy Society (GMRICS) to accelerate India's National Critical Minerals Mission. This strategic alliance, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, represents a major step toward combining academic excellence with industrial expertise in the crucial domain of mineral resources.

Building India's Mineral Research Ecosystem

The collaboration between IITGN and GMRICS, which is promoted by Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) - a Government of Gujarat undertaking, aims to create a robust framework for advancing India's capabilities in critical minerals. Dr DK Sinha, Chief Executive Officer of GMRICS, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, describing critical minerals as "the defining scientific and strategic frontier of the coming decades."

Dr Sinha, drawing from his decades of experience at the Atomic Minerals Directorate and Department of Atomic Energy, highlighted that countries with strong mineral research ecosystems will gain significant geopolitical advantages. These essential minerals are vital across multiple sectors including renewable energy, electronics, and national security.

Enhanced Learning and Research Opportunities

The partnership promises substantial benefits for both faculty and students at IITGN. According to the official release, participants will gain access to advanced laboratories, field sites, and specialized instrumentation, enabling hands-on learning experiences and high-quality research initiatives.

The collaboration will facilitate several key activities:

  • Project work and training opportunities for students addressing industry-scale challenges
  • Exchange of expertise between faculty and research personnel from both institutions
  • Specialized lectures and short courses to enrich academic programs
  • Joint symposia, workshops, and conferences involving stakeholders from academia, industry, and government

Long-Term Strategic Impact

Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean of Research and Development at IITGN, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration's potential to transform India's critical mineral research landscape. He noted that this partnership will "enhance India's critical mineral research ecosystem, building technical capacity and developing solutions that support national priorities in mineral exploration and resource sustainability."

The MoU marks the beginning of a long-term partnership focused on multiple areas of cooperation including mineral exploration, critical minerals research, technological innovation, and human resource development for India's mining sector. This initiative represents a significant commitment to addressing one of India's most pressing strategic needs while fostering the next generation of mineral research experts.

By combining IITGN's academic prowess with GMRICS's industry experience, this partnership positions India to better navigate the complex challenges of mineral resource management and secure its position in the global critical minerals landscape.
