EFLU Lucknow Campus Hosts National Workshop on Anthrogogy and Indian Knowledge Systems

The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Lucknow Campus, recently organized a significant two-day national workshop that provided a vital platform for critical reflection on contemporary adult education. The event focused on evolving learning environments and the growing relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) within higher education frameworks.

Workshop Theme and Participation

The workshop, titled 'From Teaching to Co-Creation: Anthrogogy and Indian Knowledge Traditions in the Education of Adults', attracted active participation from over 60 delegates representing various institutions across the country. This gathering facilitated meaningful dialogue on transforming educational approaches for adult learners.

Expert Sessions and Key Discussions

Sessions were conducted by distinguished scholars including Prof Geetha Durairajan, an eminent scholar and former professor of EFLU, and Shree Deepa, Associate Professor at the University of Hyderabad. Their presentations critically examined the limitations of conventional pedagogy when applied to adult learners, emphasizing the need for more appropriate educational frameworks.

The workshop highlighted the concept of anthrogogy, a term coined by David Trott in 1991. This approach recognizes adult learners as reflective, ethically responsible, and self-directed individuals who bring valuable life experiences to the learning process.

Redefining Teacher Roles in the Digital Age

In the context of emerging technologies like ChatGPT and open knowledge platforms, speakers noted that teachers can no longer be viewed as sole custodians of knowledge. Instead, their role is fundamentally shifting toward facilitation, experience-sharing, and igniting intellectual inquiry among learners. This transformation represents a significant paradigm shift in educational philosophy and practice.

Integration of Indian Knowledge Systems

The workshop foregrounded the importance of Indian Knowledge Systems, which conceptualize human life not merely as biological existence (Jeevanam), but as enhanced by Ujjivanam, or conscious awareness. Emphasis was laid on Prayojanam, the pursuit of knowledge for societal and human upliftment, leading ultimately to Anandam, or inner fulfilment.

Participants engaged with traditional concepts including Trikaranashuddhi—the purity of thought, word, and action—and discussed the ethical use of language for Hitam (welfare) and Madhuryam (sweetness). These discussions bridged ancient wisdom with contemporary educational challenges.

Valedictory Session and Book Launch

The valedictory session, conducted by Vijaya, included comprehensive participant feedback that highlighted the workshop's impact and relevance. The event also featured the launch of Bharat Boudh IKS books by Vidya Bharati Uchha Siksha Sansthan, further promoting indigenous knowledge resources.

This national workshop at EFLU Lucknow Campus successfully created a space for reimagining adult education through the integration of anthrogogical principles and Indian Knowledge Systems, marking an important step toward more holistic and culturally relevant educational approaches.
