DGMS Marks 125 Years of Mining Safety with Dramatic Fatality Reductions
DGMS Celebrates 125 Years, Shows Major Safety Gains

The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) recently held a special event at its regional office in Bhubaneswar. The organization celebrated its 125th foundation day with a focus on its long history of protecting miners.

A Legacy of Safety and Welfare

Directors of mines safety, A K Mishra and N Balasubramaniam, spoke at the ceremony. They emphasized the critical importance of safety, health, and welfare for workers in India's mining sector. Both officials stressed that these elements remain top priorities for the DGMS.

Remarkable Progress Over a Century

Since its establishment in 1902, the DGMS has achieved significant reductions in mining fatalities. The data tells a compelling story of sustained improvement.

  • In coal mines, the fatality rate dropped from 0.93 to 0.12 per 1,000 persons.
  • For non-coal mines, the rate decreased from 0.67 to 0.22 per 1,000 persons.

These figures reflect decades of dedicated effort toward creating safer mining environments across the country.

Reaffirming Commitment on a Milestone Occasion

On this 125th anniversary, the DGMS renewed its pledge to ensure the safety and well-being of all miners. The organization also highlighted its role in promoting sustainable mining practices. This dual focus aims to balance worker protection with responsible resource extraction.

The celebration in Bhubaneswar served as both a reflection on past achievements and a look toward future challenges. With over a century of experience, the DGMS continues its mission to make mining safer for everyone involved.
