Panaji: The Bombay high court on Tuesday appointed advocate Terence Sequeira as the new amicus curiae in the Birch by Romeo Lane suo motu public interest litigation (PIL), following the resignation of advocate Rohit Bras de Sa from the position.

Background of the Case

The high court had taken suo motu cognisance of the tragic incident at Arpora, where a night club fire in December last year claimed the lives of 25 individuals. The establishment was reportedly operating without the necessary permissions.

Broader Issue Under Scrutiny

The court is examining the larger issue of commercial establishments being run from illegal structures across the state. It has directed coastal panchayats and municipalities to submit detailed reports on such illegal commercial operations.

Compensation for Victims

On Monday, the court directed that all details of the deceased employees and their dependents be placed before it, in order to determine the compensation to be paid to them.
