The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested two operatives allegedly linked to a Pakistani gangster and the ISI, foiling a major terror plot in the state. The arrests were made following a joint operation based on intelligence inputs, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Details of the Arrest
The two suspects, identified as Mohammed Shahnawaz and Mohammed Irfan, were apprehended from different locations in Uttar Pradesh. According to ATS officials, they were in touch with handlers based in Pakistan and were planning to carry out attacks at crowded places in the state. The operatives had received instructions to target specific locations, including markets and government buildings.
Recovery of Arms and Explosives
During the raids, the ATS recovered a cache of arms and explosives, including pistols, ammunition, and materials for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The suspects had been actively scouting locations and gathering resources for the attacks. Officials said the plot was in an advanced stage, and the timely intervention prevented a potential tragedy.
Links to Pakistani Gangster
The investigation revealed that the operatives were working under the direction of a notorious Pakistani gangster, who has been operating from jail and has links with the ISI. The gangster has been involved in multiple terror plots in India. The ATS is now probing the larger network and possible sleeper cells in other states.
Security Grid on High Alert
Following the arrests, the security grid in Uttar Pradesh has been put on high alert. Police and intelligence agencies are conducting searches in several districts. The ATS has also issued a warning to other states to remain vigilant. The arrested operatives are being interrogated to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and identify other associates.
The arrests come amid heightened concerns over cross-border terrorism. The UP ATS has been actively working to dismantle terror networks and has made several successful arrests in the past year. This operation underscores the continued threat posed by Pakistan-based terror outfits and the need for constant vigilance.
