Girl, 3, Dies After Hydropower Water Release in Himachal

A tragic incident occurred in Tiuni town, Dehradun district, on Thursday when a three-year-old girl lost her life after being swept away by powerful water currents. The water was suddenly released from the Sawra Kuddu hydroelectric project in neighboring Himachal Pradesh into the Pabbar river without any warning around 11:30 am.

Details of the Incident

According to Tiuni Station House Officer (SHO) Ashwini Baluni, the victim, identified as Marsika, was the daughter of a laborer residing in the Sarnad settlement in Tiuni. She was playing near the riverside with other children when the forceful water currents swept her away. The other children managed to escape and alerted nearby residents.

Search and Recovery

A joint team of police personnel and local residents immediately launched a search operation. After several hours, the girl's body was recovered. A postmortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to the grieving family.

The SHO stated, "A preliminary investigation suggests that the water was released from the Sawra Kuddu hydroelectric project." The incident has raised concerns about the lack of warning systems and safety measures for downstream communities.
