Cabinet Approves Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A for Rs 2,169 Crore

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval to Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project. This phase involves the construction of a 6.03-kilometer corridor connecting Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,169.04 crore.

Key Details of the Approval

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new corridor will add five stations to the existing network: Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport. Among these, four stations will be elevated, while one will be underground.

Expansion of the Metro Network

Once the new stretch is commissioned, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 kilometers. This expansion is expected to significantly strengthen urban transport connectivity in Gujarat. The government stated that the new corridor aims to provide seamless access to the airport while linking key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient mass transit facilities.

The project is part of the broader effort to improve public transportation infrastructure in the region. The Ahmedabad Metro has been progressively expanding to cater to the growing commuting needs of the city and its surrounding areas.

With this approval, the metro network will not only enhance connectivity but also reduce travel time for passengers, particularly those traveling to and from the airport. The inclusion of stations in densely populated and commercially important areas is expected to boost ridership and ease congestion on roads.
