The Jharkhand state forest department organized its inaugural workshop on Tuesday to identify and develop potential carbon credit projects across the state. This initiative aims to assist government departments in monetizing their ongoing carbon-reduction efforts.
Structured Roadmap for Carbon Credits
The workshop seeks to provide a clear roadmap for departments that are already reducing carbon emissions but have not yet registered or claimed carbon credits. State nodal officer for climate change, Ravi Ranjan, highlighted that various departments are implementing programs such as the forest department's Jan Van Yojana, the rural development department's Birsa Harit Gram Yojana, and biogas production schemes. These initiatives contribute significantly to lowering carbon emissions, yet the absence of a proper framework has prevented them from being converted into carbon credit projects.
"But the departments are not claiming the credit for the reduced carbon, due to the absence of a proper roadmap in front of them," Ranjan explained. "So the forest department, as a nodal agency for climate actions in the state, held the workshop with various stakeholders that have potential for carbon credit projects, to develop viable projects."
Partnership with Climatex
The forest department has partnered with Climatex, a Jharkhand-based organization, to identify and design carbon credit projects for different stakeholders. Developing carbon credit projects is a costly exercise requiring technical expertise. It is essential to assess whether the revenue from carbon credits can compensate for the expenses incurred in developing these projects.
"Climatex will organize workshops with stakeholders, visit the locations of their ongoing projects, and design department-specific carbon credit projects," Ranjan added.
This workshop marks a significant step towards leveraging carbon markets to support sustainable development in Jharkhand.
