The Indian Navy conducted a unique underwater yoga session on International Yoga Day 2026, with 40 personnel from INS Satvahana performing synchronized postures beneath the water surface. The event highlighted the integration of physical fitness, mental discipline, and operational preparedness.
Underwater yoga demonstration
Personnel from the unit executed coordinated yoga asanas while submerged, demonstrating exceptional breath control, concentration, and endurance. The demanding underwater environment required participants to maintain composure and focus.
According to the Indian Navy, the initiative aimed to illustrate how yoga principles—such as controlled breathing, mindfulness, and discipline—can enhance performance under challenging operational conditions. Participants experienced the importance of physical fitness, mental resilience, and emotional balance in high-pressure environments.
Leadership and execution
The session was led by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma and conducted by in-house Naval Yoga practitioners. The underwater setting added complexity, requiring sustained coordination and focus. INS Satvahana stated that the event combined ancient yoga wisdom with the unique demands of underwater operations, reflecting the Navy's emphasis on holistic well-being and innovative fitness practices.
Alignment with global theme
The programme was part of activities leading up to International Day of Yoga and aligned with the 2026 theme, "Yoga for One Earth, One Health."
Integration into training
The Indian Navy has increasingly incorporated yoga and wellness initiatives into its training ecosystem, viewing them as tools to improve physical endurance, mental agility, and operational readiness among personnel deployed in challenging maritime environments.
