X Exposes Pakistan-Based Network Spreading AI-Generated War Videos
In a significant crackdown on digital misinformation, Nikita Bier, the head of product development at X, disclosed that a man operating from Pakistan was managing at least 31 accounts on the platform. These accounts were found to be disseminating artificial intelligence-created videos related to ongoing conflicts, particularly in West Asia. Bier announced this discovery in a post on Wednesday, highlighting that the accounts had been compromised and rebranded on February 27 to mimic variations of "Iran War Monitor."
Network Impersonated Legitimate Sources and Exploited Monetization
The network not only impersonated Iran-related monitoring accounts but also posed as multiple "IDF Girl" profiles, which Bier confirmed were also being operated from Pakistan. According to Bier, the operator was attempting to profit from X's creator revenue-sharing program by generating sensational content designed to go viral. He emphasized that the platform is improving its detection capabilities and working to eliminate incentives for such deceptive practices.
X Implements Stricter Rules Against AI-Generated Content
In response to this incident, X has announced tougher regulations for its monetization schemes. Users who post AI-generated videos of armed conflicts without clearly disclosing their artificial origins will face a 90-day suspension from the Creator Revenue Sharing program. Repeat offenders will be permanently removed from the monetization scheme. This move aims to curb the spread of false information and protect the integrity of content on the platform.
Broader Context of Misinformation and Platform Features
The issue arises amid heightened tensions in the Iran conflict, where the United States, Israel, and Iran have been launching attacks, leading to a surge in false news and rumors on social media. Concerns about misinformation are particularly focused on accounts originating from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh that mimic legitimate users elsewhere. In November 2025, X introduced an "About This Account" feature, which revealed that several accounts posting political content about India were actually operating from outside the country.
Bier also pointed to another account claiming to be a journalist in Gaza that was found to be sharing AI-generated material. Under X's monetization rules, creators must subscribe to X Premium, have at least 500 Premium followers, generate around five million impressions over three months, and complete identity verification. Because payouts are made in US dollars, users in countries where the dollar holds greater value may be incentivized to produce viral, sensational content, exacerbating the spread of misinformation.
