Russia's renewed missile blitz on Kyiv, featuring the hypersonic-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile, represents a significant escalation in the nearly four-year-long Ukraine war. The attack, which killed at least four people and caused widespread damage, underscores Moscow's strategic messaging to Kyiv, NATO, and the West.
Why Russia Continues to Target Kyiv
Kyiv remains the political heart of Ukraine and a symbolic target. By striking the capital, Russia aims to undermine Ukrainian morale, overload air defense systems, degrade command and control, and signal geopolitical intent. The use of advanced missiles like the Oreshnik demonstrates Russia's escalation dominance in long-range strike capabilities.
Missiles and Drones Used
The attack involved a layered combination of Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, Kh-101 air-launched missiles, Shahed drones, and the Oreshnik ballistic missile. Shahed drones saturate defenses, while Oreshnik's hypersonic speed and maneuverability complicate interception.
The Oreshnik Ballistic Missile
The Oreshnik is an advanced intermediate-range ballistic system with hypersonic maneuvering capabilities, a range of 1,000 to 5,500 kilometers, and speeds exceeding Mach 10. Its maneuverable re-entry vehicles and potential MIRV capability make it a formidable tool for strategic deterrence.
Is an Early End to the War Likely?
Despite diplomatic speculation, the war shows no signs of early conclusion. Both sides believe military pressure improves negotiating positions. Russia calculates that Western unity may weaken, while Ukraine relies on external support. The conflict has become a war of attrition, with mutual distrust preventing a ceasefire. The use of Oreshnik indicates a technologically escalatory phase, suggesting prolonged confrontation.
