Sri Lanka Cricket Implements Strict Fitness Protocol for IPL 2026 Participation

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially declared that its national players will only be permitted to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season after successfully completing mandatory physical performance tests. The board has established a rigorous clearance process where No Objection Certificates (NOCs) will be issued exclusively to athletes who meet the required fitness benchmarks.

Clearance Status of Key Players

In a detailed statement released on Friday, SLC confirmed that three prominent players have already satisfied the fitness requirements and received their NOCs for IPL 2026. Dushmantha Chameera, Pathum Nissanka, and Kamindu Mendis have successfully passed their physical performance evaluations and are now authorized to join their respective IPL franchises.

Chameera and Nissanka are scheduled to link up with the Delhi Capitals, while Mendis will join the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad. The IPL 2026 season is set to commence on March 28, providing these cleared players with immediate participation opportunities.

Pending Cases and Rehabilitation Requirements

The board highlighted several players whose IPL participation remains contingent upon future fitness assessments. Nuwan Thushara's eligibility for an NOC will be determined solely by the outcome of his pending Physical Performance Test, which he has yet to complete.

Meanwhile, three other Sri Lankan stars—Wanindu Hasaranga, Eshan Malinga, and Matheesha Pathirana—have requested NOCs for IPL 2026 but cannot undergo the mandatory fitness tests at present. All three athletes are currently undergoing rehabilitation programs to recover from various injuries sustained during previous competitions.

According to SLC's official statement, "The respective players will undergo the tests upon completion of their recovery and rehabilitation programs." This indicates a structured approach where player health takes precedence over immediate tournament participation.

Injury Background and World Cup Absences

The fitness concerns surrounding these players are not isolated to IPL participation. Several of them missed significant portions of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup due to injuries. Pathirana was ruled out midway through Sri Lanka's World Cup campaign after suffering a hamstring injury.

Similarly, Hasaranga (hamstring), Malinga (shoulder), and Thushara (broken left thumb) were absent from various stages of the World Cup tournament. These recurring injury issues have prompted SLC to implement stricter fitness monitoring protocols.

Comprehensive Fitness Development Program

Sri Lanka Cricket is currently conducting an extensive eight-week specialized physical training program for all nationally contracted players. This initiative aims to enhance players' physical performance standards in preparation for upcoming international assignments.

The board emphasized that the mandatory physical performance tests are part of a routine process designed to check and maintain player fitness at the highest competitive level. "Along with this program, players are also undergoing the mandatory physical performance tests, a routine process followed to check the fitness standards of the players," added SLC in their comprehensive statement.

Franchise Assignments for Cleared Players

With the IPL 2026 season approaching, the cleared players have specific franchise assignments:

  • Dushmantha Chameera and Pathum Nissanka will join Delhi Capitals
  • Kamindu Mendis will join Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Matheesha Pathirana (pending fitness clearance) is designated for Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Wanindu Hasaranga (pending fitness clearance) is slated for Lucknow Super Giants
  • Eshan Malinga (pending fitness clearance) will join Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Nuwan Thushara (pending fitness clearance) is assigned to Royal Challengers Bengaluru

This systematic approach by Sri Lanka Cricket represents a significant shift toward prioritizing player fitness and long-term career sustainability over short-term tournament participation. The board's firm stance ensures that only physically prepared athletes will represent Sri Lanka in high-profile international leagues like the IPL.
