The Denver Broncos opened mandatory minicamp this week with a cloud hanging over one of their biggest defensive names. Jonathon Cooper was nowhere to be seen, and it did not take long for questions to shift from football to what comes next.
The questions surrounding Jonathon Cooper are no longer limited to the courtroom. They have now reached the Broncos' locker room as well. With the star linebacker absent from mandatory minicamp and the organization still assessing the situation, Sean Payton faced the inevitable task of addressing one of the biggest storylines of Denver's offseason. His comments offered a glimpse into how the Broncos are handling a difficult situation while waiting for more clarity.
Sean Payton Says Jonathon Cooper Has Work to Do
Speaking to reporters during the Denver Broncos mandatory minicamp, head coach Sean Payton confirmed that the team had excused Jonathon Cooper from team activities while the organization continues to gather details surrounding his legal situation. "We've excused him from this. He's taking this time, obviously, he's got to work on himself, and the club is very much in tune with the league office, local authorities here. Clearly, there's a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have that's very high. We'll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information."
Sean Payton did not offer a blanket endorsement of his player. Instead, he stressed accountability and made it clear that Denver's standards still apply, regardless of status or contract value.
Cooper's Role Makes Situation Impossible to Ignore
Cooper's role within the Broncos makes the situation impossible to ignore. The outside linebacker signed a four-year, $60 million extension in November 2025 after establishing himself as one of the team's most reliable defensive players. He recorded 10.5 sacks last season and entered 2026 with expectations of leading Denver's pass rush once again. That is why Payton's remarks carried extra weight. The Broncos are not discussing a depth piece. They are navigating difficult questions involving one of the most important players on their defense.
The comments come less than two weeks after Jonathon Cooper and his girlfriend, Jade Fiegen, were arrested on June 5 following an alleged domestic dispute. Authorities initially charged both with domestic violence-related offenses and criminal mischief after an argument tied to cheating allegations reportedly escalated and left both of their cellphones damaged.
Jonathan Cooper later faced additional charges following a second arrest on June 11. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, prosecutors dropped the case against Fiegen. That development left Cooper as the only person still facing charges connected to the incident.
His attorney, Harvey Steinberg, criticised the decision and questioned why the prosecution moved forward against his client while dismissing the charges against Fiegen. Cooper is scheduled to appear in court on July 22.
For now, the Denver Broncos are not rushing to conclusions. Still, Sean Payton's comments offered the clearest glimpse yet into how the organization views the situation. Denver is watching closely. Cooper has stepped away from football. And until more answers arrive, uncertainty continues to surround one of the Broncos' most important defensive players.
