BCCI Crowned 'Federation of the Year' at Prestigious TOISA 2025 Ceremony in Lucknow
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) achieved a significant milestone on Saturday, being honored as the 'Federation of the Year' at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2025. This accolade was presented during a grand gala event held in Lucknow, recognizing excellence across 45 diverse sporting categories for the evaluation period of 2025. BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla graciously accepted the award on behalf of the board, underscoring a year marked by administrative consistency and unparalleled global dominance in cricket.
A Year of Unrelenting Success and Strategic Management
The recognition comes as a testament to the BCCI's relentless efforts in managing a packed calendar that included high-stakes ICC events, numerous bilateral series, and a robust domestic structure catering to both men's and women's cricket. The jury, comprising esteemed sports legends such as Abhinav Bindra, Mithali Raj, and PR Sreejesh, lauded the board for its ability to maintain operations on a massive scale while effectively fostering player pathways. These initiatives have consistently kept India at the pinnacle of world cricket, reinforcing the nation's status as a powerhouse in the sport.
Addressing Uttar Pradesh's Cricket Expansion Demands
In his acceptance speech, Rajiv Shukla took the opportunity to address a critical issue raised by the Uttar Pradesh administration regarding the expansion of domestic cricket. Responding to demands for more representation from India's most populous state, Shukla clarified the legal constraints that prevent the creation of new state units. He referenced a statement from the Chief Minister, who had advocated for Uttar Pradesh to have four Ranji teams to provide greater opportunities for players.
"The Chief Minister had said that Uttar Pradesh is such a large state that it should have four Ranji teams, so that more players can get opportunities. However, the challenge we face is that the Supreme Court has already settled this matter," Shukla explained. "It has clearly stated that there can be only one cricket association per state, except in cases where multiple associations already existed historically."
Legal Framework and Existing Exceptions
Shukla cited existing exceptions to this rule, such as in Gujarat, which has three associations, Andhra Pradesh with two, and Maharashtra with multiple bodies like the Mumbai Cricket Association, Maharashtra Cricket Association, and Vidarbha. He emphasized that apart from these historical precedents, the current legal framework strictly prohibits the fragmentation of newer associations. "A new association can only be formed only if a state is divided," he added, highlighting the limitations imposed by the Supreme Court's directive.
Innovative Solutions Through the UP T20 League
To overcome these constraints and ensure that young talent in Uttar Pradesh does not go unnoticed, Shukla pointed to the success of the UP T20 League. "This creates a significant limitation... we ourselves want more opportunities for young players, we are bound by the Supreme Court’s directive," he stated. "To address this, we discussed the matter with the Chief Minister and subsequently launched the UP T20 League, which provides opportunities to around 200 players." This initiative serves as a practical alternative, offering a platform for emerging cricketers to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience.
Celebrating Excellence in Indian Sports
Concluding his address, Shukla praised the TOISA platform for its vital role in the Indian sporting ecosystem. "Once again, I would like to thank The Times of India for organising these awards. It is wonderful to see so many talented individuals here. Their achievements are truly extraordinary, and it is important that they are recognised," he remarked. The event not only honored the BCCI but also celebrated the broader achievements of India's sporting legends, reinforcing the importance of recognition in motivating athletes and federations alike.
The TOISA 2025 ceremony stands as a significant moment in Indian sports, highlighting the BCCI's contributions and addressing ongoing challenges in cricket development. With its award-winning performance and proactive measures like the UP T20 League, the board continues to navigate legal and logistical hurdles while striving to nurture talent across the nation.
