Zomi Coordination Committee Extends Mourning Period for BJP MLA Valte

The Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC) has made a significant announcement regarding the ongoing collective mourning for Thanlon BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte. The committee declared that the mourning period will continue until March 31, 2026, in honor of the late legislator who passed away after a prolonged battle with injuries sustained during a tragic mob attack.

Background of Vungzagin Valte's Tragic Passing

Vungzagin Valte, a respected Zomi community leader and BJP MLA from Thanlon, succumbed to his injuries at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on February 21, 2026. His death came after nearly three years of medical struggle following a violent mob attack in Imphal on May 4, 2023. The ZCC, originally formed as a Joint Action Committee demanding justice for Valte, has taken a firm stance in commemorating his legacy and public service.

Declaration of Zomi National Mourning Month

In a solemn proclamation, the ZCC designated the entire month of March 2026 as Zomi National Mourning. This decision reflects the deep respect and grief felt throughout the community for their departed leader. The committee emphasized that this period serves as recognition of Valte's dedicated public service and the unresolved circumstances surrounding his death.

Funeral services for the BJP MLA have not yet been conducted, as both his family and the broader community continue to demand justice not only for Valte but also for all victims of the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur beginning May 3, 2023. Since February 24, Valte's mortal remains have been preserved at the Churachandpur district hospital morgue, awaiting proper funeral rites.

Suspension of Celebratory Activities

As part of the mourning observance, the ZCC has mandated the suspension of all forms of celebrations, entertainment programs, concerts, tournaments, festivals, and other recreational or festive events. This comprehensive restriction applies across the Zomi community as a mark of respect for the deceased MLA.

The committee has appealed to all organizations, institutions, clubs, and community bodies to extend their full cooperation during this period of mourning. However, the ZCC has provided specific exemptions for scheduled marriages, regular worship services, and essential religious-based activities, recognizing the importance of these fundamental aspects of community life.

Continued Pursuit of Justice

The Zomi Coordination Committee remains steadfast in its commitment to pursuing justice for Vungzagin Valte. The community's determination to seek accountability for the attacks that led to his injuries and eventual death continues to be a driving force behind the extended mourning period. The ZCC's announcement underscores the unresolved nature of the case and the community's collective grief over the loss of their representative.

This extended mourning period serves as both a tribute to Valte's service and a powerful statement about the ongoing quest for justice in Manipur. The ZCC's coordinated approach demonstrates the community's unified stance in honoring their leader while maintaining pressure for a proper resolution to the circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
