Born in present-day Uttarakhand, which was then part of the United Provinces, Pant heeded Mahatma Gandhi's call to join the freedom struggle, abandoning his legal practice. In 1937, during British rule, he was elected as the premier of the United Provinces, marking the start of his influential political career.
