Environmentalist RK Nair Honored with Rotary Vandana Award 2026 for Afforestation Efforts
In a significant recognition of environmental conservation, RK Nair (Radhakrishnan Nair), widely acclaimed as the 'Green Hero of India', has been selected for the prestigious State Level Rotary Annual 'Vandana Award-2026'. The award celebrates his monumental contributions to afforestation across India, particularly through the creation of Miyawaki forests.
Transforming Barren Lands into Lush Forests
Hailing from Kasaragod in Kerala and based in Sullia, Dakshina Kannada, Nair has spearheaded efforts to combat pollution and restore biodiversity. His work involves transforming thousands of acres of barren landscape into dense, fast-growing Miyawaki forests. This innovative afforestation technique has been implemented across 12 Indian states, significantly enhancing green cover and ecological balance.
The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native species close together to create self-sustaining forests in a short time. Nair's application of this technique has not only revived degraded lands but also provided habitats for wildlife and improved air quality in urban and rural areas alike.

The Vandana Award is jointly instituted by the Rotary Club of Mangalore Central and the Rotaract Club of Mangalore city. According to B Devdas Rai, chairman of the Vandana Awards Committee, the award includes a citation, plaque, and memento.
