Uttar Pradesh Achieves Record Infrastructure Growth with Expressways, Airports, and Rail Expansion
Uttar Pradesh has recorded its most significant leap in infrastructure development over the past nine years, fueled by extensive expansions in expressways, roads, airports, rail corridors, and waterways. This monumental growth positions the state as a key player in India's transportation and logistics landscape.
Expressway and Road Network Dominance
The state now accounts for an impressive 55% of India's expressway network, strengthening its role in freight and passenger movement. While numerous high-value projects have already been commissioned and are benefiting residents, many others are nearing completion.
Key upcoming projects include:
- Jewar Airport in Greater Noida, set for inauguration this week.
- Ganga Expressway and Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, expected to launch in the coming weeks, further improving state connectivity.
Since the BJP government took office, Uttar Pradesh has widened or reinforced over 63,000 kilometers of roads and constructed 35,433 kilometers of rural roads to link villages with major routes. On average, 19 kilometers of roads are added daily across the state.
"Through technology-based interventions and better monitoring, UP PWD has increased its productivity in recent years. The average construction pace of roads is rising consistently," stated Ajay Chauhan, Principal Secretary of PWD.
Bridge and Expressway Construction Surge
Bridge construction has seen a notable increase, from an average of 118 bridges per year between 2012 and 2017 to 197 annually over the last nine years. Additionally, the expressway network is set to expand dramatically.
"From two expressways available until 2017, vehicle owners will soon have access to 12 high-speed corridors," explained Shrihari Pratap Shahi, Additional CEO of the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority.
With 10 proposed expressways becoming operational in the near future, commuters will be able to navigate a total of 22 expressways and 90 national highways—a rare and robust infrastructure grid.
Rail and Waterway Infrastructure Excellence
Uttar Pradesh boasts one of India's largest railway networks, spanning over 16,000 kilometers. It is the only state where the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors intersect, enhancing freight efficiency.
The state also features 11 national waterways, including the Varanasi-Haldia route with a 425-kilometer stretch within Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi hosts the country's first multimodal terminal and a 100-acre freight village, complemented by terminals at Ramnagar, Chandauli, Mirzapur, and Ghazipur.
Aviation Network Expansion
The aviation sector has expanded to 16 operational airports, including four international ones, improving air connectivity across the state. This growth is part of broader efforts to enhance north-to-south connectivity and reduce travel times.
"The benefits of current initiatives and projects will be fully realized over the next 20 to 25 years," noted former Additional Chief Secretary Nitin Ramesh Gokarn, highlighting the long-term impact of these infrastructure investments.
