Coimbatore Cable Channel Owner Arrested for Illegally Broadcasting Unreleased Film

In a significant crackdown on copyright infringement, Coimbatore police have arrested a local cable channel owner for illegally telecasting an unreleased movie on his network. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local media industry and prompted stern warnings from law enforcement authorities.

Details of the Illegal Broadcast

The arrested individual has been identified as S Palanisamy, a 44-year-old resident of Ram Nagar near Karumathampatti. Palanisamy owns and operates a cable channel named 'Rasi Prime Movie' which allegedly broadcast the unreleased Tamil film 'Jananayagan' on Saturday without proper authorization.

What makes this case particularly serious is that the film has not yet received mandatory certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), making its public exhibition illegal under Indian law. The movie remains in post-production stages awaiting official clearance from regulatory authorities.

Police Investigation and Action

The illegal broadcast came to light when Mohanapriya, deputy secretary of the Coimbatore suburban east district unit of TVK, filed a formal complaint with Karumathampatti police station on Sunday night. Acting swiftly on the complaint, Coimbatore district superintendent of police Dr K Karthikeyan constituted two special investigation teams to pursue the matter.

Investigations revealed that the film was streamed for public viewing on the local cable network through an unauthorized internet link, bypassing all legal channels and copyright protections. Based on these findings, a police team led by Karumathampatti police inspector Vadivel Kumar apprehended Palanisamy on Monday evening.

Consequences and Seizures

The police have taken decisive action against the channel's operations:

  • The administrative office of Rasi Prime Movie channel in Karumathampatti police limits has been sealed
  • All broadcasting equipment has been seized by authorities
  • Police conducted raids and confiscated a computer, five hard disks, and various electronic peripherals used in the illegal transmission

Palanisamy was produced before the court following his arrest and has been remanded to judicial custody. A senior police officer revealed that this was not an isolated incident, stating that "the channel has also been telecasting new movies that are released on OTT platforms without proper authorization."

Broader Implications and Warnings

The police have taken a strong stance against such copyright violations. The officer further disclosed that "we have sent a recommendation to cancel the license of the channel" due to repeated violations of broadcasting regulations.

Meanwhile, Coimbatore district police have issued a comprehensive advisory to all local cable operators and the general public. The warning clearly states that illegal sharing of copyrighted content or uncertified films via internet or cable networks will attract severe legal consequences, including potential criminal charges and license revocation.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating digital content distribution and serves as a reminder that authorities are actively monitoring and taking action against copyright violations in the media industry. The arrest underscores the importance of proper certification and licensing procedures for all broadcast content in India.
