Udupi MLA Seeks Rs 10 Crore Compensation for Fire Damage

Udupi: MLA Yashpal Suvarna visited the site of a major fire accident near the city bus stand on Sunday, accompanied by officials, to assess the damage caused to a commercial building. He instructed the tahsildar and revenue officials of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) to submit a detailed report on the losses to the government. Suvarna also gathered information from local traders regarding the incident.

Preliminary Damage Assessment

Speaking at the site, Suvarna stated that the fire mishap in Udupi city has caused damage worth crores of rupees, according to a preliminary assessment. He urged the state government to sanction Rs 10 crore as compensation under a special case to support the affected traders and property owners.

Concerns Over Fire Department Response

The MLA noted complaints from the public regarding the delayed arrival of the fire department. He said further information would be sought from the authorities to address these concerns. A request has already been made to the Home Minister to provide additional vehicles and fill vacant posts in the Udupi fire department to improve emergency response times.

Manipal Fire Station Construction

Suvarna also emphasized that special efforts would be taken to complete the ongoing construction of a fire station in Manipal and make it operational at the earliest. This move aims to strengthen firefighting infrastructure in the region and prevent future delays.

Udupi CMC commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi and other officials were present during the inspection. The detailed report from revenue officials is expected to be submitted soon to facilitate the compensation process.
