UDF Candidates Make Pilgrimage to Oommen Chandy's Grave in Kottayam as Election Season Intensifies
In a significant political tradition, candidates from the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala are flocking to the grave of former chief minister Oommen Chandy at St George Orthodox Church in Puthuppally, Kottayam. Since the announcement of candidates for the upcoming elections, approximately 60 UDF poll aspirants have already paid their respects at the late leader's final resting place, marking a poignant start to their campaigns.
District-Wide Participation and Key Visits
Almost all UDF candidates from the districts of Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Ernakulam have made their way to Puthuppally. Notably, eight candidates from the Kerala Congress's Joseph faction, which is the third major constituent of the UDF, arrived together to pray at Chandy's grave. Each of these candidates initiated their election campaigns directly from Puthuppally, underscoring the symbolic importance of this location.
Prominent leaders from UDF constituent parties, including Anoop Jacob, Shibu Baby John, and C P John, have also visited the grave, reinforcing the unity and reverence within the coalition. This practice mirrors previous Lok Sabha elections, where most UDF candidates began their campaigns after paying homage at Chandy's grave, highlighting a consistent electoral ritual.
Personal Tributes and Campaign Symbolism
MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, once a close associate of Oommen Chandy, submitted his nomination after praying at the grave on Monday, demonstrating the personal and political connections that endure. Additionally, Chandy's image features prominently on the posters of several first-time candidates, leveraging his legacy to garner support and credibility among voters.
Due to the continuous arrival of candidates, the late leader's son and MLA, Chandy Oommen, has remained in Puthuppally to welcome them. Since the election announcement, Oommen Chandy's wife, Mariamma, has also been present in Puthuppally, adding a familial touch to the proceedings and emphasizing the deep respect for the former chief minister.
Logistical Arrangements and Increased Footfall
In recent days, candidates have been arriving as early as 5 a.m. and as late as midnight, showcasing their dedication. Even for those arriving late at night, arrangements have been made at the church to facilitate visits to Chandy's grave, ensuring that no aspirant misses the opportunity to seek blessings.
Church authorities report a significant increase in the number of visitors to St George Orthodox Church, attributed to this political pilgrimage. The church had previously ensured that Chandy was buried in the area typically reserved for clergy in the churchyard, a honor reflecting his stature. Further arrangements include provisions for lighting candles and offering prayers in front of the grave, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere for all visitors.
