TVK President Joseph Vijay Unveils Populist Election Manifesto in Chennai

In a significant political move, TVK president Joseph Vijay has firmly entered the populist arena dominated by Dravidian majors, releasing a comprehensive election manifesto packed with freebies and welfare promises. The announcement, made in Chennai on Thursday, targets key demographics like youth and women with schemes ranging from a monthly financial dole to extensive health insurance coverage.

Direct Financial Assistance and Healthcare Promises

Under the Vetri Magalir Thittam, Vijay pledged a direct bank transfer of ₹2,500 per month to women under 60 years of age. Additionally, every family will receive ₹25 lakh health insurance coverage, a measure aimed at alleviating medical financial burdens. To support household expenses, the manifesto includes six free LPG cylinders annually for each family and 200 free units of electricity for all households.

Distancing from DMK and AIADMK

Vijay explicitly differentiated his party from the established Dravidian giants, DMK and AIADMK, accusing them of mirroring each other's poll promises and corruption. "DMK and the others are same. If one promises 10,000, the other offers 8,000. If one says 2,000 monthly assistance, the other also says the same. Both are identical in corruption too," he stated. He emphasized that TVK's promises are realistic and deliverable, vowing not to make false commitments or misuse public funds.

Education and Women Empowerment Initiatives

The manifesto outlines several educational and empowerment schemes. To combat school dropouts, mothers or guardians of children in government or aided schools from classes I to XII will receive ₹15,000 per year. For marriage support, poor women will be given one sovereign gold and a silk saree. Other promises include:

  • ₹5 lakh interest-free loans for women self-help groups.
  • Establishment of 100 Kamarajar schools of excellence and free residential schools in all districts.
  • ₹20 lakh collateral-free education loans and AI-based free coaching for competitive exams.

Agricultural and Fishermen Welfare

Farmers are a key focus, with promises to set a minimum support price (MSP) of ₹3,500 per quintal for paddy and ₹4,500 for sugarcane. The party plans to distribute five lakh solar pumpsets and completely waive loans from agricultural cooperative societies for farmers with less than five acres. In a first for India, Vijay announced that MSP will be fixed for fish, targeting fishermen's welfare.

Grassroots Engagement and Symbolic Appeal

Vijay committed to monthly visits to Perambur and Trichy East if elected as an MLA, ensuring accessibility to the public. He also made a unique appeal to women, encouraging them to draw TVK's symbol, the whistle, as kolam in front of their houses, blending political outreach with cultural tradition.

This manifesto positions TVK as a contender in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with Vijay leveraging populist measures to challenge incumbent parties while promising transparency and deliverability.
