Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Thursday approached the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu Governor to invite it to form the government in the state. The party, led by actor-politician Vijay, claimed that it has the support of 130 MLAs in the 234-member assembly, giving it a clear majority.
TVK's Petition in Supreme Court
The petition filed by TVK states that despite staking claim to form the government, the Governor has not taken any decision. The party has urged the apex court to issue a writ of mandamus directing the Governor to invite TVK to prove its majority on the floor of the House. The petition also seeks a declaration that the Governor's inaction is unconstitutional.
Political Background
The development comes amid a political crisis in Tamil Nadu after the previous government collapsed following a no-confidence motion. TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recent elections and has been trying to form a government. However, the Governor has been holding back, citing pending legal issues and the need for further verification of majority claims.
TVK's legal move is seen as a significant step to break the political deadlock. The party has also requested the Supreme Court to hear the matter urgently, given the constitutional importance and the need for a stable government in the state.
Reactions from Other Parties
Other political parties in Tamil Nadu have expressed mixed reactions. The DMK, which was in power earlier, has said that TVK should be allowed to form the government if it has the numbers. The AIADMK and other opposition parties have questioned the legitimacy of TVK's claim, calling for a floor test to be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
Political analysts believe that the Supreme Court's intervention could set a precedent for similar situations in other states. The court is expected to hear the petition in the coming days.
