Tamil Nadu Election Race: State and Centre Compete with Project Launches
In the lead-up to the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the state government and the Union government are engaged in a fierce competition, launching a flurry of new projects to woo voters. Chief Minister M K Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin have been on an inauguration spree, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Trichy on Wednesday, laid foundation stones or inaugurated projects valued at approximately Rs 5,600 crores.
Key Infrastructure Projects Face Significant Delays
Despite these high-profile launches, the Union government has struggled to showcase several critical infrastructural initiatives. One of the most prominent is the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facility in Madurai. Announced in 2019 with a budget of ₹1,978 crore and a completion target of 2025, the project remains incomplete. Delays have been attributed to land acquisition challenges in the initial phase, revisions in tenders, and staggered funding from the Union health ministry. There were speculations that Modi might inaugurate the facility during his Madurai visit on March 1, but this did not materialize.
Another major project awaiting completion is the first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, a 14-km corridor between Poonamallee and Vadapalani. Although it received conditional clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, double-decker viaduct works are still pending. Additionally, the MRTS extension from Velachery to St Thomas Mount, designed to integrate with the suburban rail network, remains unopened due to land acquisition issues, alignment changes, coordination problems between Railways and state agencies, and pending approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
Other delayed projects include the Chennai International Airport's Terminal II expansion and the Bengaluru–Chennai expressway, both of which have missed their deadlines.
Political Parties Highlight Their Achievements
BJP leaders have countered criticism by highlighting that projects worth about ₹12,750 crore were inaugurated by Modi during his three visits this year, including upgrades to railways and highway works. On the state front, the Tamil Nadu government has launched a series of infrastructure and development initiatives. Recent inaugurations by Chief Minister M K Stalin include the GD Naidu flyover in Coimbatore, the Madhya Kailash bridge in Chennai, mini-TIDEL parks in towns like Karaikudi, 10 Mudhalvar Padhipagam-cum-libraries, museum complexes in Madurai, a ‘super tree' tower park, and numerous public parks.
Analyst Insights on Election Strategy
Political analyst R Deepak noted that inaugurations of infrastructure projects provide significant leverage to ruling parties. "Voters respond to projects that can be seen and used immediately, so inaugurations offer parties an opportunity to present administrative output in a direct and tangible manner," he explained. This strategy is evident as both state and central governments ramp up their efforts to demonstrate progress and gain electoral advantage in the highly competitive political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
