He polled 1,13,480 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Congress candidate Abdul Khaleque, by a margin of 27,561 votes. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) candidate Rafiqul Islam finished third with 49,174 votes. The result underscored TMC's growing influence in the region.
