In a fresh wave of political violence, multiple offices of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were vandalised in various districts of West Bengal on Thursday. The incidents occurred in areas including North 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly, triggering sharp reactions from party leaders who accused opposition parties of orchestrating the attacks.
Details of the Attacks
According to local sources, unidentified miscreants targeted at least five TMC offices during the early hours. Furniture, electronic equipment, and party banners were destroyed. Security has been heightened in sensitive zones as the state gears up for the upcoming local body elections.
Political Reactions
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh condemned the vandalism, stating, "This is a cowardly act by those who fear the people's mandate. We demand immediate action against the perpetrators." The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied involvement, calling for a neutral investigation.
Meanwhile, the state police have registered cases and are reviewing CCTV footage. No arrests have been made so far. The Election Commission has been alerted to ensure free and fair polls.
Background of Political Tensions
West Bengal has witnessed sporadic clashes between TMC and BJP workers in recent months. The state is considered a key battleground for both parties, with the TMC aiming to retain its stronghold and the BJP seeking to expand its footprint.
Political analysts view the vandalism as a symptom of heightened pre-election rivalry. "Such incidents undermine democratic processes," said political scientist Dr. Aparna Sen. "Both parties must exercise restraint."
