Thane Municipal Commissioner Issues Strict Directives for Traffic and Monsoon Preparedness
In a decisive move to address chronic traffic congestion and enhance civic preparedness, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has issued a series of stringent orders targeting unauthorized hawkers and pre-monsoon infrastructure works. The commissioner has mandated that the entire stretch of Ghodbunder Highway and all adjoining arterial roads be made completely hawker-free through sustained daily enforcement drives.
Immediate Crackdown on Illegal Vending
Officials confirmed that enforcement actions will begin immediately, with a particular focus on key trouble spots including Majiwada, Manpada, and Vartak Nagar. These areas have been identified as hotspots where illegal vending activities often persist late into the night, significantly impeding the free flow of traffic and creating safety hazards for both pedestrians and motorists.
The commissioner emphasized that the presence of unauthorized vendors on these critical thoroughfares has become a major hindrance to smooth traffic movement, necessitating this comprehensive crackdown. Daily monitoring and removal operations will be implemented to ensure compliance and maintain clear roadways.
May 31 Deadline for Pre-Monsoon Works
Simultaneously, Commissioner Rao has pushed for the time-bound completion of all essential pre-monsoon preparatory works across the city. Departments have been directed to prioritize several critical areas including comprehensive desilting of drains and gutters, urgent pothole repairs, trimming of hazardous tree branches that could pose risks during storms, and thorough maintenance of streetlight systems.
"With the ongoing construction works on Ghodbunder Highway presenting a major challenge, Rao has specifically instructed officials to coordinate closely with multiple agencies including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Metro authorities," according to civic sources. The commissioner has set a firm deadline of May 31 for completing all road and pothole repair works in these areas.
Contingency Planning and Emergency Coordination
In a significant escalation of monsoon preparedness measures, the commissioner has mandated that if road repairs cannot be completed by the May 31 deadline, all construction materials must be promptly cleared from the sites to ensure roads remain motorable during the rainy season. This contingency planning reflects a proactive approach to minimizing potential disruptions.
Rao has called for substantially tighter coordination among all emergency services and civic departments ahead of the monsoon season. Control rooms will be strengthened with additional resources, and ward-level response units will be established to ensure rapid deployment during emergencies. All officials have been explicitly directed to remain reachable at all times with their phones consistently switched on and operational.
Targeted Focus on Waterlogging Prevention
Departments have received specific instructions to complete all pending works at the earliest possible opportunity while ensuring adequate manpower and equipment are available for emergency responses. The commissioner has mandated enhanced coordination with local elected representatives, particularly in planning comprehensive drain-cleaning operations and identifying low-lying areas that are historically prone to waterlogging during heavy rains.
"To systematically tackle waterlogging issues, each ward will prepare detailed lists of vulnerable locations and implement preventive measures in advance," Rao stated. These measures will be backed by standby pumping systems and dedicated personnel ready for immediate deployment when needed.
The commissioner also highlighted the urgent need for immediate clearance of green waste generated from tree trimming operations. This directive aims to prevent this debris from causing additional traffic snarls or clogging drainage systems during monsoon downpours, which could exacerbate flooding situations in affected areas.
This comprehensive approach represents a significant escalation in Thane's monsoon preparedness strategy, combining immediate traffic management measures with long-term infrastructure planning to create a more resilient urban environment capable of withcoming seasonal challenges.
