Telangana Government to Introduce Gig Workers Bill in Assembly Session

In a significant move to safeguard the rights and welfare of gig workers, the Telangana government has announced plans to introduce a dedicated Gig Workers Bill in the ongoing state assembly session. Labour Minister G Vivek Venkataswamy made this announcement on Monday while responding to a question raised by Mahbubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy in the legislative assembly.

Bill Aims to Protect Gig Worker Rights and Ensure Social Security

The proposed legislation is designed to address the growing concerns surrounding the protection, fairness, and social security of gig workers throughout Telangana. Minister Vivek stated that the bill will be discussed in a cabinet meeting before its formal introduction in the assembly, ensuring thorough deliberation and refinement of its provisions.

"The state government has decided to introduce the bill to protect the rights of gig workers and their welfare," Vivek emphasized during the assembly session. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to adapting labour laws to the evolving nature of work in the digital economy.

Additional Concerns Raised by MLAs During Assembly Discussion

During the session, other MLAs, including Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao and Birla Ilaiah, raised additional concerns and suggestions regarding the bill. Their inputs are expected to contribute to a more comprehensive legislative framework that addresses various aspects of gig worker welfare, from job security to grievance mechanisms.

Dedicated Board to Oversee Grievance Redressal and Implementation

Once the Gig Workers Bill is passed in the assembly, the minister confirmed that a dedicated board will be constituted specifically for gig workers. This board will play a crucial role in overseeing the grievance redressal mechanism and ensuring that protections, fairness, and social security measures are effectively implemented across the state.

The establishment of such a board is seen as a proactive step to monitor compliance and address issues faced by gig workers, who often operate in informal or flexible employment arrangements. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance labour rights in the face of technological advancements and changing work patterns.
