Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Inaugurates State-of-the-Art Bus Terminal in Mayiladuthurai
In a significant infrastructure development for Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin officially inaugurated the new Perunthalaiyar Kamarajar bus stand in Mayiladuthurai on Friday. The inauguration ceremony was conducted through video conferencing, with the Chief Minister remotely launching the modern facility that promises to transform public transportation in the region.
Modern Facility Built at Rs 29.01 Crore Investment
The newly constructed bus stand, strategically located in Manakkudi, represents a substantial investment of 29.01 crore rupees in public infrastructure. This modern transportation hub has been designed to address the growing needs of Mayiladuthurai's expanding population and increasing bus service demands.
Backward Classes Welfare Minister Siva V Meyyanathan was physically present at the site to formally dedicate the new facility and flag off the inaugural bus services, marking the beginning of operations at this advanced transportation center.
Comprehensive Facilities and Passenger Amenities
The Perunthalaiyar Kamarajar bus stand boasts an impressive array of facilities designed to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency:
- 28 dedicated bus parking bays for streamlined operations
- A spacious 1,000-meter-long and 15-meter-wide internal road network
- 49 commercial shops and two restaurants for passenger convenience
- 10 separate passenger waiting areas with ample seating
- Modern, free toilet facilities separately provided for men, women, and differently-abled individuals
- Two specially designed breastfeeding rooms for traveling mothers
- Dedicated two-wheeler parking area
Additional Infrastructure and Support Services
The bus stand incorporates numerous support facilities to ensure smooth functioning and passenger satisfaction:
- A complete TNSTC (Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation) office and reservation center
- Two timekeeper rooms for schedule management
- A dedicated police room for enhanced security
- ATM facility for financial transactions
- Central control room for operations monitoring
- Separate luggage room for passenger storage needs
- Purified drinking water unit providing clean water access
- Comprehensive compound wall and front entrance pathway
- Covered bus bays protecting vehicles from weather elements
Replacing an Outdated Facility from the 1960s
This modern facility replaces the previous bus stand that had been operational since the 1960s on Gandhiji Road. The old terminal covered approximately acres with only 12 bus bays, which had become increasingly inadequate for the region's transportation needs.
Growing population pressures and expanding bus services had created persistent demands for a larger, more modern facility capable of handling contemporary transportation requirements efficiently.
Project Timeline and Development
The Mayiladuthurai municipality initiated construction of the new bus stand after laying the foundation stone in December 2022. The comprehensive project took more than three years to reach completion, reflecting the scale and complexity of this infrastructure development.
The new Perunthalaiyar Kamarajar bus stand represents a significant upgrade in public transportation infrastructure, offering higher passenger capacity, reducing urban congestion, and ensuring more efficient bus operations throughout the region.
