Shiv Sena UBT Inspection Uncovers Critical Safety Hazards at Mumbai's Bandra BEST Depot
A recent visit by Shiv Sena (UBT) members of the BEST Kamgar Sena to the Bandra bus depot has brought to light alarming infrastructure conditions, sparking serious concerns over the safety and basic amenities for BEST staff. This inspection is part of a broader initiative by Sena UBT members to assess conditions at depots across Mumbai, aiming to address long-standing issues that threaten worker welfare.
Structural Deterioration and Unhygienic Conditions Found
During the inspection, the team discovered roof slabs reportedly on the verge of collapse, cracked walls, broken windows, and clear signs of a weakening structure. These findings highlight a dire need for immediate structural repairs to prevent potential accidents. Additionally, rest areas designated for drivers and conductors were found to be unhygienic and poorly maintained, failing to provide a safe and comfortable environment for essential workers.
"The people who keep the city moving work under ceilings that could come down at any moment," said BEST panel member Nitin Nandgaonkar from Sena UBT. "Despite the Bandra depot being in a dangerous condition, BEST employees are risking their lives to provide uninterrupted service to Mumbai. However, the administration is neglecting the safety of the workers, which is extremely cruel. Immediate measures need to be taken for their safety. How can drivers and conductors rest in such conditions?"
Lack of Structural Audit Raises Alarms
Nandgaonkar further criticized the administration for the absence of a structural audit, questioning why such a critical assessment has not been conducted. "Why has a structural audit not been conducted? If it has, where are the details? Are they waiting for an accident to happen? Is the administration asleep?" he asked. He emphasized that conditions worsen during the monsoon season, with water seepage increasing fears of electrical hazards, posing additional risks to staff.
Echoing these concerns, BEST committee member Faisal Khan called for a joint inspection of all depots to be carried out immediately, urging comprehensive evaluations to ensure worker safety across Mumbai's public transport network.
Administration's Response and Future Plans
In response to the findings, a BEST official stated that the matter would be looked into, acknowledging plans to redevelop ageing depots and improve staff amenities. This indicates a potential step forward, but the urgency of the situation demands swift action to address the immediate dangers highlighted by the Sena UBT inspection.
The exposure of these hazardous conditions underscores the critical need for proactive measures to safeguard BEST employees, who play a vital role in Mumbai's daily operations. As the city relies on their services, ensuring their safety and well-being must be a top priority for the administration.
