Seeman's Strategic Shift to Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu Elections
In his political journey, NTK chief Seeman has navigated a challenging path through Tamil Nadu's electoral landscape. His maiden election attempt in 2016 saw him contest from the Cuddalore assembly segment, banking on support from the coastal fishing communities. However, the outcome was disappointing, with Seeman finishing a distant fifth. Undeterred, he shifted his focus to Thiruvottiyur in the subsequent election, only to face another defeat.
Why Karaikudi Became the Chosen Battleground
Now, a decade after his electoral debut, Seeman has set his sights on Karaikudi, a decision driven by multiple strategic factors. NTK cadres, affectionately referred to as 'thambigal' or younger brothers by Seeman, highlight several reasons for this choice. Firstly, Seeman's native village of Aranayur near Ilayankudi is located in the adjacent Manamadurai segment. Since Manamadurai is a reserved constituency, Karaikudi emerged as the logical alternative for his candidacy.
Secondly, NTK's performance in Karaikudi during the 2021 elections provided a glimmer of hope. The party secured an impressive 23,000 votes here, surpassing the state average and indicating a potential base of support. Additionally, the political dynamics in Karaikudi appeared favorable, with neither the AIADMK nor the DMK fielding candidates directly. Instead, the AIADMK allotted the seat to its ally AMMK, while the DMK supported the Congress candidate.
A Formidable Four-Cornered Contest
Despite these advantages, Seeman faces a formidable challenge in Karaikudi. The Congress candidate, sitting MLA S Mangudi, wields significant influence in the interior villages of the constituency. Furthermore, the presence of former Union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram, who hail from Sivaganga district where Karaikudi is located, adds considerable weight to the Congress campaign.
On the other hand, AMMK's candidate Therpogi Pandi is a strong contender with deep grassroots connections. In the 2021 elections, Pandi polled 44,800 votes, challenging both the DMK and AIADMK fronts. Locals note that Pandi enjoys substantial support from the mukkulathor community, which forms the largest caste bloc in the segment.
NTK's Ground Campaign and Opposition Criticism
NTK has been diligently preparing for this battle. State coordinator Natarajan Duraiswamy revealed that the party began its groundwork as early as June 2025. "We have divided the constituency into 12 segments and are campaigning every day through street corner meetings, public meetings, and cycle rallies," he stated confidently. NTK cadres emphasize Seeman's local ties to the region as a key asset.
However, opponents criticize Seeman's frequent seat changes as a sign of inconsistency. Sivaganga district Congress committee president A C Sanchai Gandhi asserts, "The election here is only between Congress and AMMK." He highlights Congress's historical strength in Karaikudi and MLA Mangudi's track record of achievements over the past five years.
Alliance Dynamics and Other Contenders
The alliance between AIADMK and AMMK this election cycle could significantly impact the outcome. Sivaganga district student wing secretary K Sundaralingam explains, "In 2021, BJP's H Raja, contesting as part of the AIADMK alliance, secured 54,000 votes, while AMMK's Therpogi Pandi got 44,800 votes. Since AIADMK and AMMK have joined hands this time, it would be an easy win for us."
Adding to the complexity, TVK has fielded T K Prabhu, a dentist relying on actor Vijay's popularity. D Suresh, Sivaganga East district executive committee member, notes, "Our candidate is well known in the constituency for his social service. People see him as an alternative to DMK and AIADMK."
Conclusion: A High-Stakes Electoral Battle
In essence, the Karaikudi assembly segment has transformed into a intense four-cornered contest, with Seeman's NTK pitted against established political forces. The outcome will not only test Seeman's strategic shift but also reflect the evolving political alliances and local voter sentiments in Tamil Nadu. As campaigning intensifies, all eyes are on whether Karaikudi will become Seeman's breakthrough or another chapter in his challenging electoral journey.
