Moderate Rainfall Boosts Delta Crops, Eases Irrigation Pressure in Trichy
Rainfall Aids Trichy Farmers, Cuts Cauvery Water Dependence

Moderate Rainfall Provides Vital Irrigation Support to Trichy Delta Farmers

Moderate rainfall persisted across the delta districts of Trichy throughout Tuesday, delivering much-needed irrigation assistance to farmers engaged in paddy crop cultivation and those initiating pulse planting. This timely precipitation has alleviated water scarcity concerns, particularly as the region approaches the harvest phase.

Paddy Cultivation Nears Completion with Rainfall Boost

Approximately 80% of the samba and thaladi paddy cultivation in the delta region has now been finalized. The remaining crops are anticipated to be completed and ready for harvest within the next 10 days. Farmers whose paddy crops were in the late flowering and milky stages, requiring additional water, significantly benefited from Tuesday's rainfall, which provided a crucial final moisture infusion as the crops mature.

Water Management and Alternative Irrigation Methods

Water release from the Mettur dam was reduced during the latter half of February. As of Tuesday, the dam was discharging around 2,500 cusecs. From the Kallanai barrage, water is being released into the Vennar river at approximately 600 cusecs, while the flow in both the Cauvery river and the grand anicut canal remains at zero. Due to the current shortage of water in the Cauvery, some farmers had resorted to alternative irrigation methods for their samba and thaladi crops. The moderate rainfall on Tuesday helped mitigate this dependency, offering a vital supplement.

Transition to Pulse Crops and Reduced Water Reliance

In areas where samba and thaladi paddy cultivation has been completed, farmers have commenced sowing pulses such as black gram and green gram as their subsequent crop. These pulse crops are currently in the seedling stage, having grown for two to three weeks. The rainfall enabled farmers to decrease their dependence on Cauvery water and groundwater for irrigating these young pulse crops, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Overall, the moderate rainfall has played a pivotal role in supporting delta agriculture, ensuring crop health and reducing irrigation pressures as farmers navigate water scarcity challenges.
