In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel on Tuesday seized 8 kilograms of cannabis at Aluva railway station in Kochi. The accused, identified as Iyaruddin Sheikh, a native of Murshidabad in West Bengal, was intercepted by the RPF crime intelligence branch. Officials noticed him loitering suspiciously near the main gate after he alighted from the Patna Express on platform 1. The train had arrived at Aluva and was scheduled to proceed to Ernakulam Junction, making this a critical point of intervention.

During a thorough inspection, RPF officials discovered that the cannabis was meticulously concealed inside plastic containers typically used for storing jackfruit. Investigators revealed that the containers featured specially created hidden compartments, designed to avoid detection during transit. Preliminary investigations indicate that the cannabis was allegedly sourced from Muniguda village in Odisha. Officials suspect the drugs were being transported to Kerala for illegal resale, targeting migrant workers from northern states at inflated prices. The seizure, valued at approximately Rs 4 lakh in the illicit market, underscores the economic incentives driving such trafficking operations.

The bust was the result of a coordinated effort involving the RPF crime intelligence branch, the RPF Aluva unit, and the excise enforcement squad from Ernakulam. In a broader context, officials noted that the RPF crime intelligence branch seized nearly 600kg of cannabis and arrested around 50 individuals last year.
