Punjab Minister Bhagat Presides Over Republic Day Celebrations in Mohali

Punjab Defence Services Welfare and Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat unfurled the national flag and took the salute at the 77th Republic Day function held at Shaheed Major Harminder Pal Singh Government College in Phase 6, Mohali. The event marked a significant occasion for the city, with the minister outlining the state government's key priorities and accomplishments across various sectors.

Focus on Healthcare, Education, and Employment

In his address, Minister Bhagat reiterated the Punjab government's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving educational standards, creating employment opportunities, and intensifying efforts against drugs and organised crime. He paid heartfelt tributes to freedom fighters, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and the armed forces, acknowledging their sacrifices for the nation.

Enhanced Welfare Measures for Martyrs and Freedom Fighters

Bhagat highlighted several enhanced welfare measures, including an increase in the ex gratia for martyrs and Agniveers to Rs 1 crore. Additionally, the pension for freedom fighters has been raised to Rs 11,000, with a 1% job reservation provided for their dependants, ensuring continued support for those who served the country.

Healthcare and Employment Initiatives

On the healthcare front, the minister detailed the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, which offers cashless treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh per family across government and empanelled hospitals, covering 2,356 medical procedures. In terms of employment, Bhagat announced that 63,000 government jobs have been filled on merit, boosting the state's workforce and economic stability.

Crackdown on Drugs and Economic Growth

Reaffirming the state's stringent stance against drug abuse, Bhagat reported that 45,000 accused individuals have been arrested as part of the ongoing crackdown. He also announced the Progressive Punjab Investment Summit 2026, scheduled to be held in Mohali from March 13 to 15, aimed at attracting investments and fostering economic development.

Revenue Generation and Horticulture Expansion

The minister shared impressive revenue figures, noting that the state raised Rs 36,948 crore from excise, Rs 81,417 crore from GST, and Rs 19,016 crore from stamp duty over the past 3.5 years. Furthermore, the horticulture area in Punjab has expanded to 5.91 lakh hectares, promoting agricultural growth and sustainability.

Celebratory Events and Recognitions

The Republic Day celebrations in Mohali featured a march past led by DSP City-1 Prithvi Singh Chahal, vibrant cultural performances, NCC contingents, and thematic tableaux. Awards were presented to 81 individuals for their contributions, while five Veer Naris were honoured for their sacrifices. The Red Cross Society distributed 13 sewing machines as part of community welfare efforts.

District Court Complex Celebrations

In a separate event, District and Sessions Judge Atul Kasana unfurled the Tricolour at the District Court Complex in Mohali. He greeted judicial officers, court staff, and students, with the ceremony concluding with the National Anthem sung by students of Government High School, Landran, adding to the patriotic fervour of the day.
