Pune Residents Stage Peaceful Protest Against Environmental Degradation in Kharadi
Frustrated by persistent inaction from civic authorities, residents of Kharadi in Pune organized a peaceful demonstration on Friday to voice their concerns over routine illegal garbage dumping, waste burning, riverbed encroachments, and the destruction of natural water channels. The protest, which saw community members come together in a unified call for accountability, highlighted growing fears about serious health issues and potential flooding risks ahead of the monsoon season.
Demands for Immediate Action and Civic Accountability
Led by social activist Prabha Karpe and the Kharadi Residents Welfare (KRW) group, the protest took place near Survey No. 3/6, close to Nirmala Convent School. For many participants, this event was not merely an expression of anger but a crucial demand for long-overdue civic action. According to residents, their complaints over the past two to three years have consistently failed to yield concrete results, prompting this public outcry.
Akshay Pure, a protester, emphasized the straightforward nature of their demands: "Our demands are straightforward – clear the dumping sites, restore natural water bodies, and prevent further environmental damage. This is about safeguarding the health and safety of thousands of residents."
Major Concerns: Riverbed Encroachments and Health Hazards
A primary issue raised during the protest was the large-scale dumping of debris in the Mula-Mutha riverbed across survey numbers 16 to 20, 63, 73, 133, and 134. Residents reported that continuous dumping has narrowed the river's natural course, disrupting its flow and significantly increasing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. This environmental damage poses a direct threat to local infrastructure and safety.
Additionally, the burning of waste has led to severe air quality degradation in nearby housing societies. Social activist Prabha Karpe explained, "The resulting smoke and toxic fumes have severely impacted air quality. Breathing issues have become common, especially among children and elderly citizens. The situation worsens at night when the smoke lingers." She also noted that natural water bodies and drainage channels are allegedly being filled with construction debris, exacerbating drainage problems.
Official Response and Ground Reality
Joint municipal commissioner Sanjay Pol responded to the protest by stating, "We have sent repeated notices to the offenders and now we will take strict action if they are found to repeat the garbage burning or any other offences." However, residents expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of these measures, citing a lack of visible change on the ground.
Ritesh Singh, a protester and resident of Kharadi, highlighted ongoing issues at Survey No. 3/6, where heaps of garbage and debris remain close to a school, creating a major health hazard. "Despite some clean-up work, progress remains slow and insufficient given the scale of the dumping," he said.
Broader Environmental and Infrastructure Impacts
Concerns were also raised about construction activities in the JJ project area, where natural streams are reportedly being blocked, affecting the area's drainage system. This further complicates flood management efforts and underscores the interconnected nature of environmental degradation and urban planning failures.
