Pune's Ghorpadi Rail Flyover Nears Completion, Set to Alleviate Traffic Woes by May

With approximately 70% of the project already finished, officials are confident that the remaining construction will be completed within the next three months, aiming for a May deadline ahead of the monsoon season.
Railway Approval Fuels Progress on Girder Launch
The project has received a major boost with the PMC recently securing essential approval from the railways to operate rail blocks. This permission is critical for launching the girder span over the rail tracks, a key phase in the flyover's construction. To minimize disruption, most of these blocks will be scheduled during night hours, ensuring minimal impact on both road and rail movements. PMC authorities have expressed optimism that no significant obstacles remain to meet the targeted completion date.
Addressing Long-Standing Bottlenecks in Ghorpadi
For years, the Ghorpadi area has been a notorious traffic bottleneck, with daily commuters enduring lengthy delays due to the absence of rail over bridges or flyovers across the two rail tracks passing through the locality. In 2024, the civic administration opened one flyover, which provided some respite from the chaos. The upcoming flyover, expected to be operational by May, is poised to further ease congestion and improve traffic flow significantly.
Advanced Work on Ramps and Community Anticipation
An official from the PMC's projects department highlighted that work on both side ramps has reached advanced stages. "We were awaiting the go-ahead from the railways, and now preliminary activities for launching the girder on the rail tracks have commenced immediately," the official stated. "We anticipate completing the entire launching process within the next two months, involving 30 to 40 blocks in phases. The biggest relief for commuters will be the elimination of waiting at the railway crossing."
Local residents, like Sandip Gaikwad, are eagerly anticipating the flyover's inauguration. "People have suffered immensely due to inadequate roads and constant delays at rail crossings," Gaikwad remarked. "Waiting times have increased recently with heightened train operations on both lines. There has been a persistent demand for flyovers to stop the need for halting at crossings."
Technical Challenges and Traffic Management
The flyover proposal underwent rigorous technical assessments, partly due to the presence of defense and rail establishments in nearby areas. To facilitate construction, the PMC has implemented traffic diversions in the area for over a year, aiding the ongoing work and preparing for smoother transitions once the flyover is operational.
