Panaji Ward 17 Election Decided by Mere Two Votes After Tense Recount Drama

The Corporation of the City of Panaji witnessed an electoral thriller as the results for Ward 17 were determined by an incredibly narrow margin of just two votes. The victory was clinched by hotelier and Ami Panjikar candidate, Jack Sukhija, following a dramatic and prolonged counting process that kept everyone on edge.

Multiple Recounts and Final Tally

After an agonizing one and a half hours of counting and multiple rounds of recounts, the final numbers were declared. Jack Sukhija emerged victorious with 344 votes, representing a 49% vote share. His opponent, the BJP-backed candidate Edward Jorge, secured 342 votes with a 48% vote share.

In the initial rounds of counting, Sukhija had won by a slender margin of three votes. However, Jorge demanded a recount, followed by another, and then yet another. The final outcome remained unchanged, confirming Sukhija's victory by the narrowest of margins.

Sukhija's Reaction and Future Plans

"It is only because the entire opposition came together that I got a chance and even then, it ran damn close," said Sukhija after his victory. "I knew it would be close."

Following his win in the CCP elections, Sukhija visited the statue of his grandfather, freedom fighter Dr. Jack de Sequeira, at Dona Paula to pay his respects. He expressed his commitment to continue his grandfather's legacy through dedicated service to Panaji and Goa.

Sukhija has vowed to take on the issue of casinos "head-on" and support the time-bound removal of all casinos from the Mandovi river. He emphasized the need for a proper timeline and facilities to address this longstanding concern of Panaji's citizens.

Political Significance and AAP's First Victory

This election marks a significant moment for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Goa's state capital. The party, which fielded two candidates in the elections, celebrated its first victory in Panaji. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Sukhija on his hard-fought win.

"I am grateful to the voters for their trust," Sukhija stated. "I will work to continue the legacy of my grandfather, Dr. Jack de Sequeira, through dedicated service, protecting the identity of Panaji and Goa, and addressing the concerns of its citizens."

The election results highlight the competitive nature of local politics in Panaji and demonstrate how every vote truly counts in democratic processes. The razor-thin margin of victory underscores the importance of voter participation and the potential impact of even the smallest electoral shifts.
