AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi to Embark on Two-Day Assam Campaign Tour for AIUDF
In a significant political development, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi is set to visit Assam for a two-day campaign blitz starting April 2. During his visit, the Hyderabad-based leader is scheduled to address at least eight public rallies across the state, aiming to bolster the electoral prospects of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Strategic Focus on Minority-Dominated Constituencies
The rallies will be concentrated in key districts including Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, and Nagaon, which are known for their substantial minority populations. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has emphasized that Owaisi's involvement is expected to provide a crucial boost to the party's campaign, particularly in consolidating minority votes in these strategically important constituencies.
"Owaisi's campaign is anticipated to significantly enhance our electoral prospects," stated Ajmal, highlighting the alliance's focus on leveraging Owaisi's influence to strengthen AIUDF's position in the upcoming polls.
AIUDF's Electoral Strategy and Seat Allocation
The AIUDF is contesting 27 assembly seats across Assam, with its strongest presence in Dhubri district where it will field candidates in all five seats. The party's electoral footprint extends to three seats each in Barpeta, Nagaon, and Karimganj, two seats in Goalpara, and one seat each in Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kamrup, Darrang, Morigaon, Hojai, and Cachar.
Notably, party chief Badruddin Ajmal, a three-time Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri, will contest from the Binnakandi seat. He faces competition from BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad's (AGP) Sahabuddin Mazumdar and Assam Jatiya Parishad's (AJP) Rejaul Karim Chowdhury, a key partner in the opposition alliance.
Background of the Alliance and Campaign Planning
Discussing the coordination behind Owaisi's visit, Ajmal revealed, "There have been extensive discussions with Owaisi regarding this matter. We share a longstanding relationship. My son Abdul Rahman Ajmal formally met him at his residence to seek his support for this election. Following our talks, Owaisi agreed to extend his backing to AIUDF and undertake this two-day tour from April 2."
He added, "Despite potential weather challenges, we are committed to organizing eight rallies led by Owaisi to maximize our outreach."
Impact of Delimitation and Minority Representation
Currently, 22 out of Assam's 126 assembly seats are minority-dominated, all of which AIUDF plans to contest. This number represents a reduction from the 32 minority-dominated seats that existed prior to the delimitation exercise conducted in 2023, underscoring the evolving electoral dynamics in the state.
Political Implications and Campaign Momentum
Owaisi's active participation is poised to inject fresh momentum into AIUDF's campaign, especially in constituencies where the party has historically maintained strong support. As a veteran figure in Assam politics, Badruddin Ajmal is keen to preserve his relevance amidst a shifting political landscape. The AIUDF's strategy centers on reinforcing its grassroots network and solidifying its core voter base through this high-profile alliance.
The collaboration between AIMIM and AIUFF signals a concerted effort to unify minority votes, potentially reshaping the electoral contest in several key districts. With the campaign trail heating up, all eyes will be on how this partnership influences voter sentiment and outcomes in the upcoming elections.
