Odisha Chief Minister Applauds Vigilance Directorate's Anti-Corruption Efforts

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has publicly praised the Odisha vigilance directorate for its exemplary performance in enforcing the state government's stringent policy of zero tolerance towards corruption. The commendation came during a debate on the demand for grants for the General Administration (GA) department in the state assembly on Wednesday.

Decisive Action Against Corruption

In his address, CM Majhi emphasized that his administration has taken decisive and uncompromising action against corrupt practices and officials. He provided detailed statistics to underscore the scale of the anti-corruption drive, revealing that during his tenure, vigilance authorities have registered an impressive 376 criminal cases against 640 employees.

This includes 104 Class-I officers and 78 Class-II officers, demonstrating that the crackdown targets corruption at all levels of the bureaucracy. Furthermore, the vigilance directorate has arrested 369 persons, among them 75 Class-I officers, highlighting the serious legal consequences being enforced.

Focus on Swift Investigations and Convictions

Majhi highlighted the government's priority on ensuring swift investigations and the timely submission of chargesheets. He pointed out that this focused approach has resulted in a record number of convictions achieved last year, marking a significant milestone in the state's fight against corruption.

To further strengthen and modernize vigilance operations, the government has initiated several expansion measures. "My government has already initiated steps for further expansion and modernization," Majhi stated.

Enhancing Investigation Quality

For improving the quality of investigations, the government has engaged 24 specialized consultants:

  • Eight consultants specializing in Information Technology (IT)
  • Eight consultants with expertise in banking
  • Eight consultants focusing on finance

This strategic hiring aims to enhance the technical proficiency and effectiveness of corruption investigations. Additionally, the government has granted in-principle approval for creating 50 inspector posts and 50 sub-inspector posts to bolster the vigilance workforce.

Infrastructure Development Initiatives

On the infrastructure development front, CM Majhi announced that approval has been made for constructing new office buildings for the vigilance cell and Lokayukta unit in Bhubaneswar. These modern facilities are expected to improve operational efficiency and provide better working conditions for anti-corruption personnel.

Plans are also underway for a state-of-the-art vigilance academy building with a hostel facility in the capital city. This academy will serve as a training center for vigilance officials, ensuring they are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to combat corruption effectively.

The comprehensive approach—combining legal action, human resource expansion, technical expertise, and infrastructure development—demonstrates the Odisha government's serious commitment to eradicating corruption from public administration and ensuring transparency in governance.
