Odisha Assembly Proceedings Paralyzed by Opposition Protest Over Hospital Fire Tragedy
The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed complete disruption on Monday as opposition parties staged a vociferous protest, demanding the immediate resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling. The uproar was triggered by the devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, which claimed the lives of twelve patients. This tragic incident has ignited a fierce political confrontation in the state.
Chaos and Repeated Adjournments in the Assembly
As soon as the House reconvened, legislators from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress stormed into the well of the assembly. Opposition's Unwavering Demand for Minister's Resignation
BJD MLA Byomkesh Ray was particularly vocal in his criticism, asserting that Minister Mahaling should have voluntarily stepped down following the fire at the state's premier medical institution. "Glaring lapses are clearly visible in this tragic incident. If this is the condition of a top-tier hospital, one can only imagine the dire state of healthcare infrastructure across Odisha," Ray told journalists outside the assembly complex. The opposition has consistently argued that the minister bears ultimate responsibility for the safety protocols at government hospitals.
Government's Defense and Accusations of Politicization
Countering the opposition's charges, BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy launched a sharp rebuttal. He pointed out that the previous BJD government had promised to transform SCB Medical College into a world-class institution but instead left behind "a legacy full of systemic problems." Tripathy described the fire as an unfortunate incident but accused the BJD and Congress of exploiting a sensitive tragedy to disrupt legislative proceedings.
"The state government has already ordered a comprehensive probe into the fire, and appropriate action is being taken based on the findings. The opposition should refrain from politicizing this grave issue and allow the investigative process to conclude," Tripathy stated emphatically. He emphasized that the government is committed to addressing the shortcomings and ensuring such incidents do not recur.
Seeking Resolution Through Dialogue
In an attempt to break the deadlock and restore order, an all-party meeting was convened later in the day to discuss the contentious issue. The meeting aimed to foster dialogue between the ruling and opposition benches, seeking a path forward that addresses the concerns over hospital safety while allowing the assembly to function effectively.
